| Welcome to the New Year |
"Starting
today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again
the work of remaking America. ... We will build the roads and bridges,
the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us
together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield
technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost.
We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and
run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and
universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All
this we will do."
President Obama, Inaugural Address, January 20, 2009
President Obama clearly recognizes the urgency of the need for STEM
education and careers in our country as do we, in the GRITS
Collaborative. We want all 95 counties in Tennessee to
truly collaborate and bring together programs, resources, and
organizations that are committed to supporting Tennessee girls in STEM
education and careers. The GRITS Collaborative
Project strengthens and unifies efforts on STEM for girls
and women in Tennessee and thus will enhance economic, employment, and
career opportunities for girls and women in STEM.
Let us, the GRITS Collaborative Project; accept the challenges given to
our country by President Obama. Let us restore STEM education to
its rightful place in Tennessee. To support this goal, we must
bring together the outstanding programs, resources and organizations
which support Girls Raised In Tennessee. Thus, the GRITS
Collaborative Project's resolution for 2009 is to have all 95 counties
in Tennessee represented in our Program Directory. We, the
GRITS Collaborative Project, can do this! We must do this if we want to
continue as a leader in STEM in Tennessee, in our country and across
the globe.

| Material from the NGCP |
Thanks
to Mary Swift from the National Girls Collaborative Project, the GRITS
Collaborative Project now has many informational packets,
brochures, and resources. These materials include
information about the NGCP, as well as ways to keep young women's
attention on and enjoyment in STEM (science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics). There is also detailed information on how to
register your program in the Program Directory on the NGCP
Web site. All these items, along with many of the
GRITS Collaborative Project materials and programs are available
to help you involve middle and high school girls in STEM education and
careers. If you could benefit from these resources, we can
assist you. Please contact me at the GRITS office by
calling 615.494.7763, or by sending an e-mail to my attention at

| Organization of the Month! |
|
Pre-Scripts
Pre-Scripts is a student organization at Middle Tennessee State
University. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for
students to learn more about their professional interests from the
health professionals in the community. On the 2nd and 4th
Wednesdays of the month, speakers come to MTSU to tell the students
about their experiences as they have progressed through their
careers. The students ask questions and get advice from the
speakers as well. This interaction and feedback fosters the
success of the students and also creates an opportunity for the
students to create relationships with the professionals in their
community.
In addition, Pre-scripts also provides traveling opportunities to visit
professional schools and volunteer opportunities. Pre-scripts has
volunteered with the Dispensary of Hope and Alive Hospice and joined
with other student organizations to plan events. Because
Pre-scripts includes different pre-professionals, i.e. pre-pharmacy,
pre-medical, physical therapy, the organization is a great resource for
students to find similar interests with their peers.
Relationships among the organization encourage study groups and finding
volunteer activities to participate in as a group as
well.
Sincerely, Alexis Schaible President, MTSU Pre-Scripts |
